The most powerful Democrat I can think of was Dan Rostenkowski, representing Chicago and was the chairman of the House Ways And Means Committee.

He was indicted for his role in the House Post Office scandal, and was taken out by the up and coming Eric Holder in 1994. Rosty served 15 months in federal prison in Wisconsin.

Oh yeah. Wasn’t there also one who had the Louisiana National Guard help him remove $500k that was in a freezer back during Katrina?
