In an under-noticed speech last week, US vice-president Mike Pence delivered a de facto declaration of cold war against China. As a candidate, Donald Trump complained that China was raping America. After months of smaller steps, his administration has now pledged to fight back hard on all fronts and win.
Mr Pences big idea is that US presidents Bill Clinton, George W Bush and Barack Obama fundamentally misunderstood the China challenge. The nation they embraced as a strategic partner is in fact a strategic competitor, rival, indeed adversary. Previous administrations made a cosmic bet. They wagered that integrating China into the US-led international order would lead it to develop a normal free market economy, democracy, the rule of law guaranteeing human rights, and acceptance of its place as a responsible stakeholder. They lost that bet and the Trump administration is left to deal with the consequences.
Accusing previous administrations of having ignored or even abetted Chinas abuses, Mr Pence insisted that Team Trump will speak up, stand up, fight, and win. As Mr Trump said in August: When I came we were heading in a certain direction that was going to allow China to be bigger than us in a very short period of time. Thats not going to happen any more.
If this were simply a matter of rhetoric, or the trash talk of campaigns, it could be discounted. Instead, the approach reflects a serious emerging strategy to confront China. The outlines of this clash are unfolding piecemeal, without the benefit of core strategic documents like George Kennans Long Telegram or Paul Nitzes NSC-68 policy paper that crystallised US strategy in the first cold war. But it is informed by a considered diagnosis of Chinas ambitions and actions during recent decades.

Not to mention the hot war with socialists inside the country.
Can’t build the sophisticated electronics without Chinese chips. Invest in US chip production.
Even more of a problem are the Western and American capitalists who are heavily invested in China.
Ironic that the ‘socialists’ are opposing the policies (limitation of immigration and off-shoring) that help “The Worker” .
I don’t trust the Leftist Financial Times, a Brit publication. They are death against Trump.
We don’t want a Cold War at all. We want to have a fair trade agreement. Once we get that and protection from stealing trade secrets, we are on good terms with China.
FT is simply stirring up trouble.
“The US is hunkering down for a new cold war with China”
Well, the ChiComm apes have no clue on how to anneal a bolt. They were given a Russian aircraft carrier 20 years ago, and the apes still haven’t figured out how to make it float on water. Plus the apes don’t have the logistical capability to invade Taiwan.
So why the hell are we entertaining a “new cold war with China?”
This whole article looks like deep state crap.
For nearly 27 years, we made nice with China. It was not at all hard to predict that helping a Communist nation become a superpower would come back to bite us in the a$$. But, hey, all the Elites who enabled it got really, really Rich. They never gave a 2nd thought to the long term consequences for America.
I agree completely.
We are now running a MASSIVE trade deficit with China.
Largest bilateral trade deficit between any two countries. Ever.
Everyone is sold out.

One other carrier is undergoing sea trials, and three more are on the way.
Thanks to those TWO Losers—Nixon/Kissinger
I wonder if anyone believes the original Cold War actually ended....glad our guys recognize China for what it is and are on the same page.
