Trump: 'Robert E. Lee was a great general'
The Hill ^ | 10/12/18 | CHRIS MILLS RODRIGO

Posted on 10/12/2018 7:13:42 PM PDT by yesthatjallen

President Trump praised Confederate Geader Robert E. Lee as "a great general" on Friday during a campaign rally in Lebanon, Ohio.

"So Robert E. Lee was a great general. And Abraham Lincoln developed a phobia. He couldn’t beat Robert E. Lee," Trump said before launching into a monologue about Lee, Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant.

"He was going crazy. I don’t know if you know this story. But Robert E. Lee was winning battle after battle after battle. And Abraham Lincoln came home, he said, 'I can’t beat Robert E. Lee,'" Trump said.

"And he had all of his generals, they looked great, they were the top of their class at West Point. They were the greatest people. There’s only one problem — they didn’t know how the hell to win. They didn’t know how to fight. They didn’t know how," he continued.

Trump went on to say, multiple times, that Grant had a drinking problem, saying that the former president "knocked the hell out of everyone" as a Union general.

"Man was he a good general. And he’s finally being recognized as a great general," Trump added.

— NBC News (@NBCNews) October 13, 2018 Trump has drawn criticism for his defense of Confederate statues, including those of Robert E. Lee.

He drew widespread condemnation last year following a deadly rally in Charlottesville, Va., saying that white nationalist protesters were there to oppose the removal of a "very, very important" statue.

"They were there to protest the taking down of the statue of Robert E. Lee,” Trump said at the time. “This week it's Robert E. Lee. I noticed that Stonewall Jackson is coming down. I wonder, is it George Washington next week and is it Thomas Jefferson the week after? You know, you really do have to ask yourself, where does it stop?”

Trump, speaking at another rally in Ohio last year, said that he can be one of the “most presidential” presidents to hold office. "…With the exception of the late, great Abraham Lincoln, I can be more presidential than any president that’s ever held this office,” he said to a crowd in Youngstown.

I don't think any of us are "North Haters" or "South Haters." I think most of us just treat this like sports teams for which we pick sides.

None of us really hate the other team's fans, we just find them annoying at times. :)

Grant did not take supply wagons with him into Mississippi. Grant went without resupply of any kind for 20 days.

Wait, what happened to all those ships he had sailing down the Mississippi to ferry him across?

Seven of them were gunboats. Of the other nine, three were empty and were meant to ferry troops across the river and only five of the six carrying supplies made it past Vicksburg. Other than that Grant was on his own as far as supplies were concerned.

You do realize there were slave states in the north don’t you!! You do realize Lincoln did nothing to free those slaves. You do realize Grant owned a slave and did not free him till after the war!!! You do realize Lincolns first choice was Lee!!

Two correct out of four. Not too bad considering.

Pelham: " Evidently you haven’t been around the yankeefa posse. "

"South haters", "Yankees posse", etc., all figments of our Lost Causers' vivid imaginations.
And then there's DiogenesLamp's book length historical fantasies...

You guys are nothing if not creative fiction writers.

I’ve never said the North was evil but you’re on the wrong side here

I never claimed you did. I suspect that you don't want to recognize, less appreciate the irony at play here.

You blithely accuse FReepers of being "south haters" as a strawman, intended to discredit anything else they might say. When the tactic is turned on you, you yelp like a scalded cat. Why don't you dispense with that childish ploy and join the conversation?

Say something nice about REL. Say something nice about NBF. Say something mean bout Grant. Or continue to whine about people treating you mean.

Your call ;'}

Oh! which two?

There were slave states and Lincoln did offer an army command to Lee, though whether he was first choice or not isn't known. Regardless, if not first then Lee was one of the first offered an army command. Those are the two correct. The other two are incorrect.

I got that. He did so because he brought those supplies on the Ships that ferried him across the Mississippi. He calculated what he needed, and had his plan ran longer, he could have gotten resupply from those ships. Vicksburg is on the water is it not?

Lincoln was instrumental in getting the 13th Amendment through the House and Senate, and made sure it was part of the 1864 Republican platform. That led to the end of slavery in the Northern states and your claim was that Lincoln did nothing to end slavery in the North. Grant owned one slave which he freed in 1859, not after the Civil Was as you also claimed. So both of those were incorrect.

Grant freed the only slave he owned in 1858. The slaves that served his wife Julia, were the property of her father. These slaves were freed when Missouri outlawed slaver in Jan 1865. Lee may have never owned a slave. The slaves he managed at the Arlington estate were property of the GWP Custis, his wife’s father. Custis died in 1857. In his will he named Lee the executor of his estate. One of the will’s provision that the slaves were to be freed when the debts and legacies eof the estate were paid in full, but no later than 5 years after Custis’ death. Lee freed the last of the Custis slaves in Nov 1862.

He conducted the campaign without resupply. What he may or might have done is of no consequence. He went 20 days fighting 7 battles before he laid siege to Vicksburg and there he was resupplied.

That is dodging his point. Lincoln didn't ORDER the slaves freed in areas under which he had control. He did order them freed in the South, which was clearly contrary to constitutional law if you operate under the claim that the Southern States were still part of the Union.

The only way you can legally justify freeing slaves is to assert the Southern States were no longer part of the Union, and therefore not subject to Constitutional laws.

So long as the South is regarded as subject to Constitutional law, it was legally impossible to free their slaves, just as it was legally impossible to free Northern slaves at that time.

He conducted the campaign without resupply.

By choice, and because he didn't need it. It was always available to him if he wanted it. He only had to send the boats back up the river and load them up for the return trip.

I want President Trump to follow up with this statement:

“Adolph Hitler was a savvy politician. He also was enough of a visionary to be instrumental in building the Autobahn, and to drive the construction of the Volkswagen.”
