Drones swamp US-Mexico border but federal agents powerless to stop them
Washington Examiner ^ | 12 OCT 2018 | Anna Giaritelli

The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI identified this week unmanned aerial systems, or drones, as one of the greatest national security threats to America — rating it as severe a concern as cybersecurity hacks, critical infrastructure attacks, and terrorism.

While drones are often thought of as techie toys, officials are becoming increasingly worried about the threat they pose and are warning it's only a matter of time until the devices are used to drop a bomb or fentanyl powder on people in a populated area. Drones are already used by transnational criminal syndicates and drug cartels. The technology is readily available to terrorist groups.

Incidents that have gained public attention in recent years have largely involved inexperienced fliers losing control of the aircraft, but the military and law enforcement officers are already dealing with cases of drones being used for illicit purposes.

Border Patrol agents and port officers belonging to the Department of Homeland Security’s U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency are dealing with drones being used as airborne spies.

On the U.S.-Mexico border, drones are already being used to spy on federal law enforcement operations and smuggle contraband through the sky. The first drug smuggling incident via drone was documented in Nov. 2015. Now, it's a daily occurrence in some regions of the southern border, but it's rarely reported because CBP is unable to seize the devices. Arrests are rare.

Find me a crosswind at 500’agl less than 10 knots? Maybe 5:00AM to 9:00AM, but not likely?

I have no idea where you got your "10 knot crosswind" thing, but here's a drone from DJI that has a top speed of 45 mph and a 30 minute endurance.

It’s “git”, and “licen”. It’s only “license” if it’s plural, as in “I’ll need to see you boys’ license”.

Can you imagine pickups lined as far as you could see, grills smoking, bunch of folks just waiting for the next drone to come flying by.
Good times my friends, good times.
Betcha it’d cut down on illegals crossing as well.
Govt could put a bounty on them, get a drone- get a box of shells.

Try holding a course with 5 pounds of thrust and a crosswind? It’s one thing to stay in the air. It’s a whole other to not end up where the wind takes you. The higher up you go the more the winds aloft push you.

That is why I cited BIDEN (just shoot your shotgun) and JF’nKerry (the pic of him ‘supposedly’ shooting skeet).
They are probably the LAST TWO you would want anywhere near a loaded weapon.....

Seems like a great opportunity for target practice.

Drones can go as fast as 125mph and fly as high as 10000ft. Shotguns will be ineffective, and those are just commercially available hobby platforms, it could get a lot worse if some smart dedicated enthusiasts got involved. Did you ever see the story of the guy that made a jet powered pre-programmed “cruise missile” (it was shaped like a cruise missile, but wasn’t in fact a missile at all, just a, autonomous jet aircraft). We need to think ahead to plan for these attacks, and shotguns aren’t going to do it.

Shooting enthusiasts would flock to the border for a chance to bag a drone.

And pay for the opportunity....adding to the Wall funding....maybe Trump can set it up and also have a driving range which gets one a dinner with Trump (and Melania) if one knocks a drone out with a golf ball....

RC sailboat racers have to put flags on their transmitter control box antennas to identify what radio channel they are using so as not to interfere with another racer using the same channel.

One would think border patrol could install stations along the border that would send signals out that would jam the RC channels being used by the cartels......
