Romney defends Trump’s policies as ‘effective,' disputes he led 'never Trump' movement

Utah Senate candidate and former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney claimed Saturday that he wasn't a leader in the "never Trump" movement among conservatives, and said some of the president's policies have been "pretty effective."

Romney was asked following a rally in support of Arizona Senate candidate Martha McSally (R) about where he stands with Trump given his fierce criticism of the president during the 2016 campaign.

"You led the never Trump movement. I mean, what happened with that?" a reporter asked, in a video posted online.

"I don’t think that was the case," Romney responded. "President Trump was not the person I wanted to become the nominee of our party, but he’s president now. The policies he’s promoted have been pretty effective, and I support a lot of those policies."

When asked about his stance on President Trump, Mitt Romney denies that he led the Never Trump movement. Seen here at a gaggle after a rally for #AZSen candidate @MarthaMcSally

Romney during the 2016 campaign delivered a speech blasting then-candidate Trump as a "phony," and a "fraud" who was "playing members of the American public for suckers."

The 2012 GOP presidential nominee and Trump have since patched things up, with the president offering his endorsement as Romney seeks to replace retiring Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) in the Senate.

Romney has asserted that while he agrees with Trump on a number of policy issues, he will speak out against the president on issues where he disagrees.

No, he can’t...please, please let’s have 3+ net pick-ups in the Senate - the more the better, to marginalize his influence and make it less likely he can be the “deciding vote” on anything to hold things hostage.

Boy, the standard-bearers for the Republican Party since Reagan were just unbelievably awful until Trump. Bush I, Dole, Bush II, McCain, Romney. When you can honestly say that Dole is the best of the bunch . . . wow.

He may have never led it, but he sure as hell was a big part of it.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Romney was somehow mixed up with the dossier fiasco.

Beats me. At first everyone was saying his son Josh Romney would be running and possibly Jason Chaffetz. Apparently Chaffetz was told it wasn’t his turn yet and that’s when he decided to resign from the House and go to Fox News.

I think we will get more than three.

The Bush League Republicans still outnumber the Senators that side with the citizens and the rule of law.

There is a reason has not been exposed yet .
Is the Gop plotting another TPP Globalist Nightmare Bill .
Romney hates the Gop Base so the reason has to be awful for us.

Mittens led the effort to get Egg McMuffin on the ballot, but claims he did not lead the Never Trump movement. He’s either delusional or he thinks we’re stupid.

I love this and I’m glad to let his comments stand.

This is very important. The GOPe is coming to the realization that Trump has the support of 90% of Republicans and siding with the other 10 is not a good idea.

McRomeny says this just to get elected.
After he gets elected, he’ll likely turn into the next McQueeg.

Agree 100% just like Bredesen running for the senate in TN saying he would have voted to confirm Kav…. will say anything to get elected and then … screw you

As long as he votes yes on Trump’s major policy initiatives, I couldn’t care less what this pos thinks. He will just be a number.
