Trump says 'rogue killers' could be to blame for Saudi journalist

President Trump on Monday suggested Saudi Arabia might not be responsible for the fate of Jamal Khashoggi, a U.S.-based journalist whose disappearance has sparked an international outcry.

Trump told reporters at the White House that "rogue killers," and not Saudi officials, may have gotten to Khashoggi. The president cited no specific evidence, but noted he had just spoken with Saudi King Salman, who denied that Riyadh was involved.

"I don’t want to get into his mind, but it sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers. Who knows?" Trump said.

The president said King Salman's denial "was very, very strong" and it did not seem as if "there was a question" in the king's mind about his claim Saudi Arabia was not involved.

"We’re going to try get to the bottom of it very soon, but his was a flat denial," said Trump.

Turkish officials have said they believe Khashoggi was killed and dismembered inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on orders of the government in Riyadh.

The journalist, who wrote for The Washington Post and resided in Virginia, visited the consulate on Oct. 2 to get paperwork necessary for his marriage and has not been seen since.

There have been reports of 15 Saudi agents entering Turkey before Khashoggi arrived at the consulate and leaving the country following the journalist's disappearance.

“The president said King Salman’s denial “was very, very strong” and it did not seem as if “there was a question” in the king’s mind about his claim Saudi Arabia was not involved.”

That’s a relief.

It’s refreshing to see King Salman come clean, and be so honest on the murder of Khashoggi.

Exactly right. Things are complicated over there and there are no good guys. President Trump is watching out for the interests of the USA — whatever anyone else does is not my concern.

Sure. But, Trump cares. He’s already but his foot into the mess.

From what I’ve been reading, the victim deserved killing and kudos to whoever did it.

It’s good to see President Trump take a step back on this.

I don’t give that a whole lot of weight. President Trump also said Balsey Ford was very credible until he highlighted her lack of credibility a few days later. He is pretty good at adapting to circumstance.

Why such a complex plot to kill a person?

1. Fly in a 15 man hit team, 15 people are 15 people that may talk in the future.
2. Kill the man.
3. Cut him up and pack him in suitcases and take body parts out of the country under diplomatic seal.
4. Assume no one involved will ever say anything.

Each step above is fraught with discovery.

If they wanted him dead why in the hell do it this way at the Saudi Embassy. One pro and a silencer and patience and the opportunity would have arisen to take this man out easily and quietly and with no trace of the killer.

Before than can be a murder conviction, there must be a body and a murder weapon

So far, there are neither.

There is no evidence that a murder was comitted. There is no evidence the man is dead.

I had the same thought. The Saudi’s killed one of their own in their own consulate in Turkey. They kill people all the time. We are suppose to care because he had an American employer?!?!
