I realize your questions are factious, but consider: Lincoln was so unpopular, that several states left the union rather than have him be President. He wasn’t even on the ballot in most of those states.

Although he won reelection in 1864, he was opposed by a very popular Union general and there was lots of doubt at the time if he would be reelected.

In the brief time between the Confederate surrender and his own death, it was obvious that there was going to be a clash between him and Congress on how to deal with the South after the war—Congress wanted to punish and Lincoln wanted to bring things back to normal as quickly as possible.

I often wonder how Lincoln and his reputation would have fared if he hadn’t been assassinated how he would be view in American history. The fights with Congress would have been something, I think.
