Doris Kearns-Goodwin hasn't, however, grown beyond the diagnostic stage of analysis whose assumption is that "They" (meaning we) are all afraid, anxious, trembling, desperate for a demagogue to take away the things we dread. Aside from the obvious condescension, that rules out the uncomfortable hypothesis that They (meaning we) are totally pissed off at the ridiculous and destructive behavior of the self-appointed elite who feel they are entitled to rule us all. Which strikes me as quite a bit more likely than any two-penny psychiatry that consigns our political choices to some sort of mental pathology.
Totally tired of this approach. If Doris really wants to find out how They (meaning we) think about the topic all she has to do is ask us.
