Are y’all ok?
All is fine! We were packed but thankfully the reported even higher waters from Llano never materialized. A lost jet ski is floating past now and there is still some debris but not like it was. Swift waters coming down from Buchanan today. Opposite direction from yesteday’s current from the Llano River.
Great news! The Llano did not rise last night so we’re getting back to normal. There is swift water from the opposite direction today what with Buchanan opening 4 flood gates. We should be able to get out of the subdivision.
Yes, the 2900 bridge in Kingsland collapsing was shocking. The other two bridges and the slab crossing were closed and there was talk that one may have damage. They’ll be assessing damages today as the waters recede.
A tidbit about the bridge - President LBJ built it (with tax dollars) so Lady Bird could get across the river to grocery shop. They had a lake house just to the north of the bridge on the west side of the river. Gov. Connally, their bff, had a lake house across from them on the east bank. Hence, the name change from Lake Granite Shoals to Lake LBJ.
Bridge before the collapse.
A couple school districts are still closed but others are open or two hour delays today. Yesterday, a school bus driver went around a road closure barricade and got stuck. There was one student aboard. The driver got fired and arrested.
Sadly, a body was found yesterday near Granite Shoals. There was talk about another body near the Llano Bridge in Llano. Amazing, a man survived going over Starke Dam - https://www.kxan.com/news/texas/man-rescued-after-going-over-starcke-dam-and-floating-downstream/1529689463 Of course, there were idiots out. A couple jet skiers zipping around in front of us and 3 kayakers down on he Pedernales River.
In uber lib Austin, they’re more concerned over one of their many bike trails being closed!!! Oh, the horrors! Forget the houses along Lake Travis getting flooded. Libs have their own special priorities.
Bridge before collapse.
I spoke too soon. Just got a call from the sheriff’s office that Buchanan is opening 4 more gates in a couple hours. That will be a total of 8. I’ve never seen that many open. The current is swifter than my earlier post so suspect they’ve either started opening more gates already or they’ve opened the wider. Whatever, something is going on. It’s still raining.
Boats and jets ski, etc. still floating past.
very interesting, when i was young(65 now) it was always Granite Shoals. my aunt owned Sunrise Marina there. Grandfather had many properties on the lake and i even spent my high school post graduation there. it was soooo nice there back in the day before all the development.
That bridge was constructed in 1969. LBJ made sure it was built to replace the ferry when he visited one of his ranches.
It was built to withstand 50 yr floods. Oh well.
Yikes! Hope no homes are lost there in Kerrville or any of the towns affected by this storm. Be safe, LV!
That’s cool. I had an aunt who lived right across in Shady Oaks. 50 years ago, as kids, we’d try to swim across to Sunrise Beach. Of course, we never could. We’d get to the sand bar in the middle and play around and then swim back to the house. We would take the boat to fish there.
We’re living in the house my grand parents bought back in the early 60s. They originally planned on buying Little Lodge in Kingsland but thankfully settled on a house. It was once part of Buckner’s back during the orphanage days. Bet Little Lodge was flooded.
Yes, it’s a shame there’s been so much development. So many fishing and swimming holes are no longer. There’s constant boat noise with their music going at full blast 24/7. Wake boats have destroyed our boat dock that we had to sell the boat and make plans to tear it down. So many loud drinking parties and blaring dance music at pavilions. It’s just not fun here anymore. Oooh, and the property taxes....
Glad to hear. My wife has an Aunt and cousin in Kingsland who live on either
side of the [once] 2900 bridge. They are also doing fine.
EVERY gate on that dam is open.
The news at midnight Wednesday night said Mansfield Dam would likely go to 8 flood gates tomorrow. They said Lake Travis water level is going up about a quarter of a foot an hour. Rain probability is 50% on Thursday.
At about 2:30 pm Wednesday afternoon the dam still had 4 flood gates open when I drove down to see it.
