Trump says each Cabinet secretary should slash 5% of their budgets after he pledges to cut spending
CNBC ^

"We're going to be asking for a 5 percent cut from every secretary today," Trump told reporters at the White House in advance of a meeting with those secretaries.

The proposal comes days after the Trump administration announced a $779 billion budget deficit for fiscal year 2018 — a six-year high and a 17 percent jump from the prior period.

"He's asking them to cut the fraud, the waste, the abuse," White House senior advisor Kellyanne Conway said on Fox Business News. "Cut the fat, not the essentials." Trump had said in an earlier interview on the network that "We're going to cut spending, absolutely."

"It's not as tough as you think, and frankly there's a lot of fat in there," Trump added, while noting that "we had to get the military done last time." Trump signed a $716 billion defense spending bill into law in August.

The president did not mention any specific area of government spending he planned to examine for cuts. But he also said during the interview that his administration will "continue with the tax cuts, because we have other tax cuts planned."

That sounds different than just not soending it.

We would get to August and then spend like crazy what we had been hoarding all year. The reason we spent was “use or lose”.

Don’t answer any budget questions until after the midterm, the only question the media is interested in is when will the GOP cut seniors SS and medicare. Media could care less about the deficit that is just used to get to the other point

What President hasn't promised to cut fraud, waste, and abuse.

No

So then the headline should read, "Trump says some Cabinet secretaries should slash 5% of their budgets after he pledges to cut spending".

A very nice beginning, but that’s just going to give a little dent on our runaway budget deficit.

It’s the Huge entitlement spending that needs to be cut and let’s face it... most Americans, REGARDLESS of WHAT THEY SAY, don’t have the heart to make it happen. Ev

Congress budgets based on what was spent last year. If you don’t spend 5%, that’s 5% you won’t have in your budget next year. And if you do cut that 5% and then the President asks you to cut 5%, you don’t have the fat to cut anymore.

Getting Bureaucrats out of that mentality and into doing what is right for the nation is not an easy task.

NPR/PBS received level funding from congress and Trump singed the bill last month.

I’ll believe a reduction when I see it.

Years ago here I suggested that the President call a press conference, which went like this:

By Executive Order, as of today, with the exception of the defense and SSA, all agencies have 10% fewer funds to use than they did last night. If you feel your agency cannot perform at the same or higher level in light of this budget change, please let me know as soon as possible so I can find a replacement. Have a nice day.

The gov't has no reason to be efficient and every reason not to be since prestige in DS is a function of the size of your budget. This would be a step in the right direction.

It is worse than that! In the Marine Corps, baseline budgeting meant SPEND EVERY DAMN PENNY, ANNUALLY!

Because if you didn’t, your command would be pissed, because they would lose money the following year, based on your SPENDING from the previous year, NOT on the budget.

When I see veterans right on their resume, “Balanced a $1.3 million annual budget.” it pisses me off - because what that means is that he/she spent AT LEAST $1.3 million ANNUALLY (even if it was on pens and paper or extra TP)!

I wish him and his budget director all the luck in the world.

But anyone who believes a Republican Congress in the modern era will cut spending in real terms is on crack.

And Democrats are worse.

It just will not happen.

Even Jimmy Carter promised that.

“waste and fraud” reduction? Old hat. Bill Clinton did it. So did Ronaldus Magnus. Without fleshing out, it means nothing.

Here how budgeting in DC Works

Rep; were going to cut this and this and this and spend more on this.

Dems: If you do that we going to do everything we can to sabotage you. Either give us this and this and this or you cannot have that.

VVoter group A. If you cut MY thing, I am going to vote for the Dems, Don't cut my thing, cut those useless things over there

Voter group B. If you cut MY thing, I am going to vote for the Dems, Don't cut my thing, cut those useless things over there

Voter group C. If you cut MY thing, I am going to vote for the Dems, Don't cut my thing, cut those useless things over there

Congress ok, here is the “compromise” we will just spend more on everything.

This is why NOTHING gets cut. Trump has exactly the right answer.

Ok, we going to cut 5% from EVERYTHING. That way no one can use anything else getting something more as an excuse to do nothing at all again this year.

Nope, not even Reagan got it done.

https://www.cato.org/publications/commentary/reagans-budget-legacy

Problem is every single voter has his “good spending” he wants protected. As soon as you suggest cutting ANYTHING they all start howling “No, don’t cut my shiny thing, cut that useless thing over there” The “comprise” in DC always ends up to spend more on everything.

The ONLY shot we might have is making EVERYONE take a cut. Every other time anything has been tired to reign in Govt spending US VOTER kill it by voting for the Dems in the next election cycle.
