Bolton isn’t a globalist. He’s a realist*, an America Firster. Not in the sense of Nazi-lover and isolationist Charles Lindbergh, but in the sense of the typical Cold War strategist. The basic assumption is that the world is full of bad guys very involved in each others’ affairs. We help the guys who help us, no matter how different they are from American norms, and stomp the guys who stick it to us. It’s that simple.

* The term realist has evolved into Carterism, but it used to mean helping the people who help you. A realist would have no problem applauding Khashoggi’s demise, given his Muslim Brotherhood terrorist background. Whereas idealists like Rubio and Graham seem to be up in arms about his death. My personal view is that if Khashoggi had anything other than a lingering death, the Saudi government went too easy on him.
