The kid was talking to the cops afterwards, so he was alive. They were pit bulls and that’s why they attacked. The 9 year old was attacked by the dad’s dogs, so he was not an intruder. And yes, while being mauled i would bet he kicked back.

Let me give you an example. A close relative of mine had a pit bull as a pet, not as a guard dog. The dog was treated very well, lovingly in fact. And there was never any problem.
Except for the time the dog broke loose and savaged the UPS man.
