Canada installs Chinese underwater monitoring devices next to US nuclear submarine base

Washington in the South China Sea, Chinese scientists, with the help of the Canadian authorities, have succeeded in positioning four monitoring devices in waters just 300km (186 miles) off the United States’ Pacific coast.

The instruments, which use hi-tech sensors to monitor the underwater environment, are connected to the Ocean Network Canada (ONC), a grid of marine observatories stretching from the northeast Pacific to the Arctic. While the network is operated by the University of Victoria in British Columbia, its four new additions are the property of the Sanya Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, a unit of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which also developed and built them.

Underwater station could be a game changer, Chinese scientist says The devices were placed on the Endeavour segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge by a remote-controlled submersible owned by the Canadian Coast Guard on June 27. Now fully operational, they can be used to provide real-time streaming of data to the Chinese institute’s control centres in Sanya, a city on the island province of Hainan, and elsewhere.

The Chinese institute was equally reticent, and while the Canadian foreign ministry acknowledged the receipt of a request for comment it did not immediately reply.

The US state department said it had “nothing to say” on the matter.

Canada declares war. A couple cub scouts with BB guns should be able to mop it up.

So an adversary gains a negligible increase in naval intelligence that is easily thwarted by the US if need be and the canucks make a few bucks in the process.

Nice to know but not losing sleep over this one.

It’s interesting to consider that maybe Trump was acting upon knowledge he couldn’t tweet/talk about in his contentions dealings with Trudeau.

Still, this hasn’t made even blogosphere US news yet, to state nothing of the flailing msm...yet there’s nothing to frame this as other than what is reported: A reckless act by a supposed longtime ally.

I would hope the sensors “mysteriously fail” in the coming weeks...

Canada has the more coastline to defend than any other nation on earth. More than the next three countries combined. Their land is full of natural resources like coal, gas, oil, timber, etc.

Yet, they have almost no significant military to speak of. Why is that? Because they live next door to the biggest benevolent tough guy on the planet, who has made it known that nobody's allowed to mess with our special little friend next door.

But if the slow little kid decides to egg our house or let his dog crap on our lawn, maybe we'll look the other way for a little while. Let him see what life is like defending himself. Remind him how this works.

Reading the article, it appears that the devices are intended as scientific devices rather than military.... At least that is what is claimed. I suspect that if they were not, then we would not be reading about it.
