Donnelly, Braun nearly even in Downs Center poll

Democratic U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly leads Republican challenger Mike Braun by a single percentage point in polling results released Monday by the Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics at Purdue University Fort Wayne.

Donnelly is favored by 41 percent of likely voters, Braun by 40 percent and Libertarian Lucy Brenton by 8 percent, with 11 percent of respondents undecided.

The poll of 816 likely voters was conducted Oct. 12 through 16 by SurveyUSA and has a 4.6 percent credibility interval, akin to margin of sampling error.

"Whether Brenton is pulling more voters from one candidate than the other and who makes up the undecided voters very likely could be the deciding factors" in the Nov. 6 general election, the nonpartisan Downs Center said in a news release.

The center said Brenton "appears to be pulling support from Donnelly or Braun depending on the category." It also said, "Given how close the race is, Brenton could be a deciding factor."

The results are similar to other recent polls that have given Donnelly small leads in his re-election bid.

The Downs Center poll shows Donnelly with a 19-point lead over Braun among independent voters, an 11-point lead among women, a five-point lead among people with college degrees and a four-point lead among respondents younger than 50. Donnelly enjoys leads of 83 percent among blacks and 46 percent among Hispanics.

Braun, a Jasper business owner, is in front of Donnelly by 23 points among people who regularly attend church, 11 points among white voters, nine points among respondents with a high school education but who did not attend college and eight points among men. He and Donnelly are tied among voters older than 50, with each candidate favored by 42 percent.

An incumbent polling under 50% is normally in deep trouble.

> Libertarian Lucy Brenton by 8 percent <

And right there is why we need run-off elections if no one candidate gets more then 50%. (And if I were George Soros, I’d be donating big money to the Libertarians.)

Side note: I like much of what the Libertarians stand for. But why can’t they see that their presence on the ballot actually helps the anti-freedom party?

This is the thing that is really starting to piss me off. What in the HELL women?

WHY are you voting for Democrat polices of rabid corruption, grotesque incompetence and violent insecurity?

Why are you voting to make the world a worse place for you, your children and your grandchildren?

WAKE up and take a look around? Take a loot at yourself. Life has NEVER been better for you then right now. Why ib the hell are you voting with your genitalia instead of your brains?

Because they want everybody to be “nice,” that’s why. Women’s suffrage was a fatal error.

I’m with ya .... this Libertarian BS drives me nuts. They’re never going to win anything of consequence in Indiana but they sure can screw up a lot of things.

....my oldest son voted for Gary Johnson. Why? George W Bush. He said he wasn’t going to give the (R)s any more free votes. I tried to get him to deal with that in the primary but go with the lesser of the evils in the general. It didn’t work.

I’m making headway this time around - because: Trump! Doing what he said he was going to do.

I was just going to post the same thing. Politics has gotten so strange that I don't know if it's true anymore but it used to be gospel.

I've got an idiot acquaintance who claims she only votes if there's a libertarian running.

Assuming this poll is accurate, you would have to conclude that Braun is the likely winner here, regardless of the showing of the Libertarian candidate.

41% is a lousy number for the incumbent and there's an old rule of thumb that the undecideds generally break for the challenger. Then, too, you have a national trend breaking toward Republicans in the last few weeks and Indiana is generally a Republican state.

Donnelly +1, Braun+4, Braun+4

Me thinks Donnelly needs to update his resume.
