Retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’ Connor, the first woman to ever sit on the Supreme Court, revealed on Tuesday that she is suffering from dementia and likely Alzheimer's disease. The diagnosis had been made "some time ago."
"While the final chapter of my life with dementia may be trying, nothing has diminished my gratitude and deep appreciation for the countless blessings in my life," she wrote in a public letter. "As a young cowgirl from the Arizona desert, I never could have imagined that one day I would become the first woman justice on the U.S. Supreme Court."
O'Connor is 88 years old. She said she wanted to compose this letter while she is "still able to share some personal thoughts."
Very sad news. I’m glad she’s letting us know while she can control how the news is broken. Dementia is something I fear acquiring the most. I wouldn’t wish it on anybody.
Any common threads in the folks that do have it? Is there anything a person can do to avoid it?
I’m grateful for many things in my life. My son, who is a joy to me every day at 32 years old. And my sister, who moved my dad, once he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s to her home,about 2800 miles away but only 5 miles from me.
Having dad there was quite a thing for my sister and her family, much too much to get into here. We were able to get dad into a privately operated home funded by the VA. And this was the best place on earth for him.
I’m grateful for the fact that my dad always recognized his daughters. And also for the fact he got a second wind before the end...he saw that DJT was going to run and he was tickled.
I hope that Justice O’Conner’s family gets these moments before she is gone.

It’s such a very sad story but I am certain this happens often.
I have a photo somewhere of Sandra holding my oldest, as a baby, taken about 7 years ago. She was standing next to Jan Brewer at the time.
It was at an event celebrating the 100th anniversary of Arizona Territory being admitted to the Union. My grandmother was one of the last babies born in Arizona Territory.
That is very cool...history, my FRiend...history. Arizona territory indeed. What a time. What a people. People who made America Great.
This makes me sad. That is an awful way to go. In examining my mindset, I might think it is just fine for the likes of Stalin, Hitler, and Pol Pot, but for a politician who is wrong-minded...well...I can only feel abject sympathy.
My great aunt had it (whether Alz or something else I don’t know). I hadn’t seen her for a long time cause she moved to Florida but her daughter brought her to town to attend one more family party (summer of 09’). I was real excited to see her, and she barely remembered me and was unable to have a conversation, that was crushingly sad. She was like a 2nd grandma to me and my brothers (before she got grandkids of her own and moved to Florida), who sadly could not attend and didn’t get to see her. That party was also the last time I saw my grandma outside of a hospital bed.
Dementia is a terrible fate, for the sufferer and their family. Prayers for Justice O’Connor. She’s no one’s favorite obviously but I’d not wish such hell on her.
