Explain or give an example of how a patriot is not also a nationalist?

Think Germany in the 1930s and 1940s.

You idiot, In Germany it was National-Socialists. Why? Because Nationalist by itself does not imply socialist. Here is the definition of Nationalist for possible but doubtful penetration.

nationalist noun

na·tion·al·ist | \ˈnash-nə-list, ˈna-shə-nə-list\

Definition of nationalist (Entry 1 of 2)

1 : an advocate of or believer in nationalism

2 : a member of a political party or group advocating national independence or strong national government

and the definition of nationalism:

nationalism noun

na·tion·al·ism | \ˈnash-nə-ˌli-zəm, ˈna-shə-nə-ˌli-zəm\

Definition of nationalism

1 : loyalty and devotion to a nation especially : a sense of national consciousness (see CONSCIOUSNESS sense 1c) exalting one nation above all others and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations or supranational groups Intense nationalism was one of the causes of the war.

2 : a nationalist movement or government
