They live in a major city with dozens of well known hospitals but had to travel hundreds of miles to a neighboring state to get some one to perform the surgery.

Why is this not malpractice for an unnecessary surgery on a child?

The risks: death or paralysis from anesthesia, infection, removal of breast and surrounding tissue, permanent sterility from rounds of testosterone. Plus the unknown endocrine risk from a life long regime of hormones!!!

Absolutely it is malpractice, and shame on the entire medical establishment for allowing this horrible thing to happen.
