California Gov. Jerry Brown to lead Doomsday Clock group

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - California Gov. Jerry Brown has been named executive chairman of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a group that measures manmade threats to human existence.

The group manages the Doomsday Clock. It's a visual representation of how close the Bulletin believes the world is to catastrophe brought on by nuclear weapons, climate change and new technologies.

The group announced Thursday that the Democratic governor leaving office in January will take over leadership of the bulletin.

It says Brown and group members will generate information "to reduce manmade existential threats."

Brown says in a statement provided by the group that the planet is in one of its most dangerous eras since the atomic bomb was dropped.

That Doomsday Clock concept is outdated by at least 40 years.
This was more popular/ influential during the Cold War when no one really knew what the other side was capable of.

It was also presumed that the very moment any country other than the USA possessed a Nuclear Bomb, they would use it to destroy us or other Western countries.
I recall being very worried when Pakistan admitted to having Nuclear Bombs. Yet, even the Paki’s have maintained some semblance of control all this time.

I saw the "clock" in Chicago in my undergrad days. There's more than one. It only shows the hours 9-12. There is no mechanism to it (like a children's Playskool clock). It's hour of notoriety is long past.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, they were decent enough to move it back from 2 minutes to Midnight. Hey! I thought the whole point of a clock is that it normally only moves in one direction. By their own standards, it is meaningless.
