It costs all of about $10 to get a state ID that will suffice for all legal purposes.


Any voter ID has to be free to avoid running afoul of the 24th Amendment that abolished poll taxes. But as you say, it is practically impossible to get by without ID.

A drivers license or state ID is not exclusively a "voter ID" but can be used to prove identity at polling places.

If a separate, special ID were required for voting I might agree.
