With the confirmation of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, legal analysts suggest that he could be a deciding vote in overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, and that has ratcheted up interest in the abortion issue in Pennsylvania's gubernatorial contest.
Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf makes no bones about it. He wants no part of anything that would further restrict a women's access to abortion than what is permitted now in state law. He has vetoed or threatened to veto bills that would have done just that.
"This issue is the woman's right to choose. It's about the choices that the person most directly involved makes," he told PennLive/The Patriot-News editorial board on Monday. "If this new court has swung to the right more so now with the Kavanaugh confirmation, if they threaten Roe v. Wade then here in Pa. I will continue to stand as I have done, stand as backstop for any legislation that seeks to interfere with the right of the woman to make whatever choice she feels is appropriate."
His Republican challenger Scott Wagner, meanwhile, describes himself as "100 percent pro-life." His record backs that up.
He voted in favor of a bill that would ban most abortions after 20 weeks and criminalize a medically accepted method of terminating a pregnancy. He said he would support a bill banning abortion at as early as six weeks or when a fetal heartbeat is heard. He co-sponsored a bill that would ban abortions based solely on a prenatal Down Syndrome diagnoses.
Currently in Pennsylvania, women can get an abortion for any reason except for the purpose of gender selection up until the 24th week of a pregnancy and only in certain circumstances after that.
The majority of voters seem content with leaving that nearly 30-year-old law alone.
Thirty percent of people responding to an August poll by Franklin & Marshall College said abortion should be legal under any circumstance and 54 percent said it should be legal under certain circumstances. Just 15 percent held the view that abortion should be illegal and 1 percent didn't know.
Despite the overwhelming support for legalized abortion in at least some situations, F&M political scientist G. Terry Madonna said this issue doesn't rank among the top three or four issues that will affect a voter's decision. If a particular proposal to change the abortion law was in play close to the election, that would be a different story he said. That appears unlikely with so few days left on the Legislature's voting schedule.
But pro-choice organizations such as Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania Votes aren't taking any chances. They are spending millions to try to defeat Wagner.
"Make no mistake. Scott Wagner is a danger to Pennsylvania women and families and he does not deserve to be in the governor's office," said Sari Stevens, executive director of Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania Votes.
Um no Miss Murphy that man was named Kermit Gosnell. He killed two women One named Shemika Shaw and the other was Karnamaya Mongar on his abortion table plus he killed baby A B C D E F and G by snipping their necks with scissors. Say nothing for the thousands of other babies he murdered.
Scott Wagner just might be the best thing to happen to your poor excuse for a state after letting a serial killer like Kermit Gosnell run loose for over 20 years.
There I said it.
Wolf will be re-elected. Largely because Wagner has run a sucky campaign, and too many “good holy Catholics” are nonetheless willing to pull that straight-party “D” lever.
His future Lt. Governor, John Fetterman, is far, far worse. A Community Organizer type to the left of Ocasio-Cortez.
Reluctantly I must pray that Gov. Wolf remains in good health.
That blows
Yes--but how about access to copy-editing skills? Hmmm?
Abortion divides virtually every race beyond the county level.
If the election rests on prolife issues the Republican wins because Pa is very pro life state.
Which of course is the Baby which means the Dem position is hypocritical hysteric nonsense.
I was reassured Wagner was the grassroots candidate who had the momentum to win, and he has had nothing but clay feet ever since the primary ended. The PA GOP has been MIA for months and Wagner sunk his campaign with incompetence.
Make no mistake; Satan is seductive. The face of evil is Sari Stevens.
Too many Catholics in Pennsylvania turn a blind eye to abortion, because Democrats bring in more jobs and free stuff. They turn a blind eye to increased taxes, fewer jobs, gender fluidity, hidden racism.
I am dumbfounded every time I visit my home state and talk to my classmates. They listen politely, and then say "I know that he is a corrupt liar, but he is good for the district." Maybe Pennsylvania will change. Everyone knows that Wolf has not been good for the people of PA. But he gets too many votes from Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
Maybe Pennsylvania needs a state level electoral college to offset the few corrupt counties that end up dominating state level elections. These counties and cities are packed with too many low information voters demanding government handouts.
The majority of voters seem content with leaving that nearly 30-year-old law [sic] alone... Despite the overwhelming support for legalized abortion in at least some situations,
Yup. I knew that.
The guy who is going to be his Lt. Gov., John Fetterman, is even worse. A community organizer who became the Socialist Mayor of Braddock. God help us if he ever becomes Governor.
John Murtha was the very person I was talking about with my uncle. Murtha had turned ugly with false accusations against the Marine Corps. In spite of that the people would keep scum like him in office.
I got the same rationale from people voting for Democrats who support abortion. Many friends and relatives just look the other way and blindly vote for corrupt Democrats.
