Historical fiction is not a field I have read much in. I love History and can give you ideas there.

For H.f. “All the Kings Men” by Robert Penn Warren is a great one. “Burr” by Gore Vidal; “Ragtime” E.L. Doctrow; “The Conqueror” Gertrude Atherton (this is an old book and contains more history than fiction. But Hamilton’s life reads more like fiction than fiction itself.)

It used to be said that Dickens created caricatures, while Dostoyevsky created psychological characters.

This may not be well-known, but it is a truly excellent read:

Dickens did nothing of the sort. While his characters are very similar from book to book there is plenty of psychological commentary.

Dickens is not the academics’ favorite and they tend to disparage his writing. He also has an English outlook and disposition while Dostoevsky is thoroughly Russian. That meant living on the edge of hysteria for the intelligentsia.
Having been exposed to Western thought it was difficult to reconcile Russia’s backward condition with modernity and keep your mental balance.
