MIDTERM polls are pointing towards a Congress flip on November 6, as discontent with President Donald Trump reigns among the US public. What would happen if the Democrats won in the House of Representatives?
The House of Representatives and the Senate are both up for reelection on November 6, with both chambers sporting a total of 470 free seats altogether.
The available 435 seats on the House of Representatives mean every member is to be replaced, so Democrats have a valuable opportunity to wrestle control.
If this was to happen, Donald Trumps job would become immediately more difficult.
The Republicans would ultimately find it much more difficult to pass laws, and Mr Trump may even see impeachment proceedings initiated against him.
What will happen if Democrats win the House of Representatives?
The House of Representatives is one part of Congress two-chamber system, and is vital for forming and passing bills through the US Government.
Bills are introduced and then voted on in the chamber, and are later passed to the Senate for official assent before they reach the President.
A majority of votes in the House are required for them to be passed, so parties are vying for control as it means they can easily progress their own introduced bills.
At the moment, a Republican controlled House means bills are accelerated in favour of Donald Trump.
If Democrats were to gain control of the house they would be able to resist Republican bills by voting against them in a majority.
This would mean many wouldnt reach the Senate in the first place, taking away valuable power from the Republicans and out from under Donald Trump.
In addition, Democrat introduced bills would be accelerated through Congress, meaning it could be possible to repeal laws already passed by Mr Trump, and introduce more Democrat-backed laws.
The most important issue stemming from a Democrat controlled house would be the ability to introduce impeachment proceedings however.
Under United States constitutional law, the power of impeachment is granted to the House of Representatives.
Any impeachment proceedings are commenced by a member of the House in the form of a resolution, and referred to a federal committee within the chamber.
Usually, this is the House Committee on the Judiciary, which votes to authorise the beginning of impeachment proceedings against the President.
After deliberation, the resolution is reported to the whole house with recommendations for voting.
The House of Representatives debates on the resolution and then may pass it on to the Senate to initiate impeachment proceedings with a majority vote.
If Democrats were to become the majority in the House of Representatives, they would be able to vote the impeachment through to the Senate, which could result in an impeachment trial for Donald Trump.
However, the ones who would determine whether Mr. Trump was guilty or not would be Senators in the Senate chamber acting as a jury.
At the current rate, only 35 members of the Senate are up for reelection from a Republican majority, and recent polls show Democratic Senators are having trouble garnering the votes necessary to flip the house.
Polls!!!!! How good they work last time? Hugh Republican victory next Tuesday. Look for 10 senate seat pick up.
the stock market will drop and press blames TRump.
The other side is the Democrat agenda will die in a GOP Senate and House Republicans will still hold enough seats to sustain presidential vetoes.
It would be a Pyrrhic victory for the Democrats.
If the dems win anything, the grand experiment is dead. We’re on borrowed time as it is.
Thorton Melon - “Whats a widget?”
AND WE WILL NEVER KNOW AND BE ABLE TO PROSECUTE THE SEDITIOUS CRIMINALS IN OUR SO-CALLED GOV’T!
If we should happen to lose the House, Paul Ryan is entirely to blame.
If the American people decide not to give Trump a mandate, well then thats the way it happens.
Lets hope the polls are wrong.
Win or lose, they’ll only become more dangerous and insane.
I predict trouble on election night.
Recession.
Well keep the Senate as insurance. Its a guaranteed lock.
So is Paul Ryan the reason only 40% of Americans approve of Trump?
“That losing the House is even at risk is a testament to the total failure of leadership in Paul Ryan, who along with 40+ other #NeverTrump incumbent Republicans were so consumed by hate towards the President that that they chose to retire instead of coming on-board to support his winning message.”
That speaks volumes, doesn’t it? America is on her death bed and these rino scum would rather stab Trump in the back rather than try to save her. Unbelievable.
Even if the Republicans retain the House and Senate, little legislation, if any, will get passed as long as the Senate rules require 60 votes for cloture. The Democrats will see to that. BUT, a Republican majority in the Senate can proceed with all due expediency to confirm more judges to the Federal bench and perhaps another Justice to the SCOTUS if Buzzie Ginsburg achieves room temperature during the next couple of years.
Thought experiment. I know it's difficult for you.
What if the GOP, upon President Trump's election two years ago, had enthusiastically embraced and advanced his entire agenda?
We'd be looking at an EASY 60 in the Senate, and record numbers of GOP in the House.
But here's a hint: people don't vote split ticket between the House and Senate.
Meaning, the Red Tsunami hitting the Senate, will have coat tails for the House.
Hint 2: the GOP is running ahead of their numbers in early ballots compared to last election, *across the board*. Yes, even in CA.
You mean 51% of Americans?
For a supposedly unpopular guy, Americans wait in line for hours to see him and theyre overflow crowds.
If Republicans underperform next week, it wont be because of Trump.
“Lets hope the polls are wrong.”
Yes. The sound of that stuttering gloating harpy taking the gavel will be too much to bear.
I think that Paul Ryan wants to feel vindicated in his Trump hatred by losing the House. He does not care a thing about the American people.
Obama in 2010 made it all about him. In 2018, for Trump, its all about the country.
