Amish outreach: GOP, Trump supporters energize untapped conservative constituency
The Washington Times ^ | October 31, 2018 | Dave Boyer

Posted on 11/01/2018 9:47:04 AM PDT by TBP

A campaign rally with Vice President Mike Pence in central Ohio on Wednesday included two unlikely voters, farmers Levi Miller and Ben Hostetler, who are part of a determined effort by Trump supporters and the Republican Party to get members of the conservative Amish and Mennonite communities to the polls.

Mr. Miller and Mr. Hostetler ordinarily drive horse-drawn buggies, but they got a ride for this event with a volunteer from the group Bikers for Trump, which has been working on outreach to the Amish in Ohio for about two years.

“The Amish are doing a lot under the radar,” Mr. Miller said of the community’s political activity. “There’s a lot of Amish who vote, although not near all of them do. We are concerned about our religion, our way of life, what our children and grandchildren are going to face.”

The untapped conservative constituency burst into view in the 2016 presidential election, when tens of thousands of Amish voters in Pennsylvania were credited with helping Donald Trump narrowly win the state, the first time a Republican carried Pennsylvania since 1988. One of those who noticed was Rep. James B. Renacci, Ohio Republican and a U.S. Senate candidate this year.

“There were over 30,000 Amish who voted for President Trump in Pennsylvania,” Mr. Renacci said. “If you look at Pennsylvania’s results in 2016, and you look at the number of Amish who are registered in Ohio to vote — and in many cases only get their information from local newspapers — it’s important that they get out to vote and know the issues that are important to them, the candidates. We’ve had multiple meetings with the Amish leadership as late as this week.”

Ohio actually has more Amish than Pennsylvania. An Amish joke : “God created Mennonites to drive us where we need to go.”

I can say this — The Amish vote tilted Pennsylvania for Trump in 2016.

True that.

Holmes County, with Millersburg as its seat, has the largest Amish population in the country the last time I heard.

You haven’t lived until you’ve visited Keim Lumber up there in Charm OH near Millersburg. Rather odd seeing the Amish management there walking around with their Blue Tooth headsets.

We’re in a suburb between two major cities. We have an Amish market just a bit down the road (a mile or so.) The people who work there (other than the “English” they hire) are from Lancaster County.

What do you mean by Urban-Amish?

Rassmussen: Black Approval Rating of President Trump Hits Record High

President Donald Trump’s support among black Americans has never been higher, according to a new poll released Monday.

The Rasmussen Reports daily tracking poll showed that 40 percent of black voters surveyed supported Trump, while Trump’s overall rating showed that 50 percent of all voters approve of the job Trump is doing in Washington.

He broke records at 25% and now he’s at 40%. I don’t know how that will convert to mid-terms but it can’t hurt.

blue dribble

If the GOP can get 20 percent of the black vote, it will pretty much doom the Dems.

The Amish at the market near us come down in vans. One of the young ladies who used to wait tables at the restaurant told us, “We’re not allowed to drive them, but we’re allowed to ride in them.”

Don’t tell anyone, but two or three weeks ago, we spotted one of the young waitresses at the Amish market on her device.
