What Germany and EU are watching in US midterm elections
Deutsche Welle ^ | 10.31.2018 | Christian Trippe

Germans, like many in the European Union, want to know whether US President Donald Trump will tweak his foreign policy should the Democrats win partial control of the legislature next week. […]

Elmar Brok, the former chairman of the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs and a member of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats, told DW that it would be good for “checks and balances” for the Democrats to win control of at least one chamber of the bicameral legislature — most likely the House of Representatives. Brok acknowledged, however, that such an outcome could have a downside: “President Trump would then concentrate entirely on foreign policy because he would no longer be able to push through any domestic reforms. That could make us even more nervous.” […]

Josef Braml, who comments on matters of US policy for the German Council on Foreign Relations, cautioned that a win for the Democrats would not necessarily ease the tensions in the emerging trans-Atlantic trade war. “The Democrats have been radicalizing free trade for some time now, and they have been protectionist for even longer,” Braml said. “What’s new is that Trump has also given a voice to the protectionist forces among the Republicans.” […]

Some opponents of the Republican president hold out hope that, rather than enabling Trump’s agenda, a Democratic majority in Congress could impeach him, leading to his early ejection from the White House. […] In Berlin and Brussels, the tone is somewhat cautious when it comes to the topic of impeachment. German observers of US politics fear that Trump could attempt to change the subject by ordering a military strike on Iran or North Korea. …

Exactly. Never mind that they themselves could be guilty of that “collusion” to “steal” elections, since they put this face on.

They’ll concoct anything to arouse anti-American sentiment.

Even Obama, whom they “loved”, got egg on his face over the phone-tapping debacle.

If they were doing the right things, why should they worry?

The Yurps still haven’t figured out that a president is not a king who can legally bind the US to a treaty on his say so alone....that it takes ratification by a 2/3rds majority by the Senate or it is no treaty at all as far as the US is concerned and the next president can simply withdraw.

You’d think Versailles would have taught them this.

Failing to learn it then, you’d think the US withdrawal from the Kyoto Protocols would have taught them.

Having still failed to learn, US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and the Iran Deal (the fact that none of these are called treaties ought to be a clue) might serve as useful learning tools for them.

They are remarkably slow to understand that the Congress has a huge role to play and that unlike a prime minister who is the head of the majority coalition in a parliament, a President does not automatically have control over the votes in the Senate.

I guess its too much to ask for them to grasp that the House can impeach but the Senate tries the president....though you’d think Bill Clinton’s impeachment would have taught them.
