One of the most anti-illegal immigrant Hispanics in American history was Cesar Chavez. He knew firsthand how the hordes of illegals depressed wages for his low skilled American Farm Workers labor union workers and organized them to police the border as vigilantes. It was Chavez that coined the now unspeakable epithet of “wetback” and pushed for strong border defenses and zero tolerance of illegal migration. If American Hispanics actually voted in their self interest rather than as dependable supporters of the far left and cheap labor business interests they would be backing Trump and the border wall.

Chavez was against illegal immigration but he didn't coin the term "wetback'

As SanchoP question s, Operation WetBack was an Eisenhower operation and Chavez co-founded the National Farm Workers Association in 1962. Two years after the end of Ike's term

“In 1973, the United Farm Workers set up a “wet line” along the United States-Mexico border to prevent Mexican immigrants from entering the United States illegally and potentially undermining the UFW’s unionization efforts”

Chavez got his moment in the sun in the 0’s. The term wetback was around LONG before that.

Truman started OPERATION WETBACK when he was still in office & Eisenhower continued it after he was elected in 1952. They managed to get 11 million illegals OUT of the USA.

Uh, no.

It predates his birth.

I’ve lived in Texas 20 years. The only people I’ve ever heard use the term “wetback” have been Hispanics.

There can be quite a bit of friction between Hispanics who have been here and while and recent immigrants. Recent immigrants are often seen as rude, demanding, and wanting to have everything given to them. Immigrants can be particularly rude to younger generation Hispanics who don’t speak nor understand Spanish- a common situation.

*********************************************
The term was first used in the 1920s to refer to people who crossed our Southern border by swimming or wading the Rio Grande River.

Chavez and his union stuff was in the early 1960s.
