THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HARRY WARREN

”COWBOY FROM BROOKLYN”

For once Jack Warner came up with a winner. This 1938 comedy Western featured Harry Warren songs with Johnny Mercer lyrics and also featured a young newcomer named Ronald Reagan who got to sing. Pat O’Brien and Dick Powell filled out the cast as New York con men out west with Ann Sheridan and Priscilla Lane as the love interests. This is the trailer from the film and is worth a glance. Reagan was only 27 when this movie was made.

The good news is that it’s finally the Swing Era. The vapid Thirties dance band sound has been replaced by superior musicianship.

Another one of his I’ve never heard before, but a cute tune.

“There’s a riot on the gay white way
when a ditzy debutante cuts loose.” (From the movie trailer)

Somehow, that sounds really naughty.

(Ronald Reagan was awfully cute back then!)
