I know we would never fail to help them, but Id like to see us make them pay for our saving their worthless a$$es if it ever happens again. They have very short memories.
Or, NO memory. I met a British WWII veteran in the 80s who absolutely believed Britain was winning the war before Pearl Harbor and that we just piled on to get the spoils - which of course is completely and objectively untrue. He was not alone. Even WITH our help, Britain was less than 60 days from mass starvation and raw material shortages.
OTOH, Ive found French people (real French people, not Parisians) very aware of the contributions of America to their country - perhaps more so than the average American is aware of the contributions the French had made to our success, particularly in the 19th Century.
I just looked it up. We lost 114,000 in Europe so the idea that we “piled on to get “spoils” doesn’t pass the sniff test. As for your comments regarding the French, you are spot on. In my travels in France, I have witnessed the warmth of the “country French” toward Americans for what we did to drive the Germans out of their country. The Parisians are the exception, but they’ve had a stick up their asses about Americans forever anyway.
Um, no. I talked to elderly Frog, in France, who was convinced that the French won WWII. This was near the German border.
