One look at her son’s photo makes me believe he really does have severe and chronic mental illness. He is high functioning, yes, but his judgement is still likely to be flawed. I can only speculate. I am not a doctor, but this young man appears to have classic Mongoloid features.

FYI: “Mongoloidism” is a 19th Century term for a condition known today as “Down’s syndrome”, or just Down Syndrome. It is not, repeat not, a mental illness, but a genetic flaw which occurs during pregnancy (as opposed to one which occurs to either parent before pregnancy). It's primary behavioral symptom is restricted intellectual functioning. Its principal physical symptom is a distinctive facial configuration, which can make Down’s children look more like other Down’s children than like their parents or siblings.

One of my cousins, and my best friend's daughter, have Down’s Syndrome. At one time this might have resulted in early death; in the past, few Down’s patients lived past early adulthood. Today, many survive to live reasonably happy, productive lives, with proper support and assistance.

And BTW, the picture posted with the article shows a young man, an adolescent boy really, who does not have any classic Down’s features.
