It was freeper gossip and groupthink. None of them knew squat about him other than the rumors they would repeat to each other.

It is not McMaster himself, it is that he is the poster boy for the “good old boy” system in South Carolina state government . His protege, Hugh Leatherman has been in the state senate 40+ years and let’s say has undue influence on the awarding of state contracts, especially highway construction. I know I am naive to expect clean and honest government, but I digress.
