Americans cast votes on Tuesday to decide whether Donald Trumps Republicans maintain their grip on the U.S. Congress, or if Democrats gain the power to slow the presidents agenda after a divisive campaign marked by clashes over race, immigration and trade.
The first national elections since Trump captured the White House in a stunning 2016 upset are a referendum on the polarizing president and a test of whether Democrats can turn the energy of the liberal anti-Trump resistance into victories at the ballot box.
The Democrats have a good chance of winning at least the U.S. House of Representatives, but slimmer hopes of gaining control of the Senate, opinion polls show.
If they do take the House, Democrats could launch congressional investigations into aspects of Trumps administration, from his tax returns to possible conflicts of interest, challenge his overtures to Saudi Arabia, Russia and North Korea, and oppose him on immigration, tax cuts and trade.
If Republicans hold both chambers of Congress, Trump likely would claim vindication for his polarizing style, a month after he secured a conservative majority on the Supreme Court when the Senate approved nominee Brett Kavanaugh after a fight over sexual misconduct accusations that split the nation.

Polarizing style. Americans serm to approve. Al-Rooters sucks.
Okay, let’s get something straight right off the bat.
Trump’s Agenda is not at stake! It WILL be implemented,
it’s only the amount of resistance he has to over come.
Now we know that every dirty trick they can play will
be brought out, but they haven’t seen Trump in a real
fight yet. I pity the fools.
Did Al Reuters use this headline in 1994 or 2010?
In 1994 Peter Jennings (a Canadian on American tv) chastised voters and said they’d thrown a temper tantrum.
Most of Trump’s agenda went nowhere with Ryan & the Rinos in charge of the House & Senate, so the premise of the story is a pant load.
You never heard a damn thing about all the dem seats lost under their Mocha God was in office.
BBC said it’s a referendum and the most important election of your life , making it sound like Trump is pure evil ,but it’s the Dems that’ll be pure evil
I voted but I have laid this all in Gods hands now. When Hillary was favored by 92% to Trumps 8% and Trump won, I believe that to be Gods doing (His ultimate will) so if God put him in office it is hard for me to believe that God would not want him to go on for full terms and set our country right with the All Mighty. just my humble opinion.
Yes. Trump is divisive and polarizing because he actually opposes the left and doesnt suck up their crap like W or constantly reach across the aisle like McCain. Trump actually does the things he promises, unlike every other president in my lifetime.
I just said that very same thing to my father, not 5 minutes ago.
Agreed. I don’t think the Dems will take the House, but if they do they will look like road kill after two years of tangling with Trump.
Pretty much the US at stake if the Dems control both houses; well with the help of RINO’s.
Trump agenda ping!!!!
I pray the Dems dont take the House. If that happens, TRUMP WILL NEVER GET HIS WALL........
I am watching CNN for entertainment... or blood pressure.
If the Democrats win anything they don’t already have it is a mandate for Medicaid expansion, a mandate for rejection of the tax cut and for higher taxes, a mandate for open borders.
If the Democrats lose but come closer in key states and districts than in 2016 then it is a total rejection of Trump.
If Democrats lose big then Medicaid expansion, taxes, immigration were not the issues and they are not rejected. The election was all about fear and voter suppression.
**What is a key state or district? Any place that the Democrats do better. If the Democrats do worse, then it isn’t a key place. Those backwater areas just don’t count.
Whatever happens, Trump pulled off major tax and regulatory reform, ended support for the mad Mullahs, and gave us a Supreme Court majority of real jurists.
I don’t care if he enjoys making harsh comments to his opponents. Those are HUGE achievements.Thank you Mr. President!
If the GOP loses the House, complete blame can be laid at the feet of Paul Ryan and Kevin McCarthy.
McCarthy should be shunned as a candidate for Speaker of the House. Jim Jordan needs to be the House Speaker. If not that, The Minority Leader.
The GOP establishment has screwed this election.
Agree 100%.
