>>>Why should they not be allowed to vote?<<<

Why should Murderers be allowed to breathe?

Making certain Crimes Felonies means there are stricter punishments, losing the Right to Vote and own Firearms for Life are two of the reasons for someone to think long and hard before they commit a Felony.

Now the weight of the Law has been rescinded. Might as well remove the word Felony from all the Law Books.

“What’s this pick and choose stuff?”

It’s called states’ rights.

Yep, I remember Dukakis defending the weekend release of Murderer AND FELON Willie Horton as a States Rights issue.

What is the greatest need of a felon? Felons need good jobs more than they need anything else, except, of course, Jesus.

This is the worst problem they have when coming out, being rejected for employment. It is often very agonizing for them. In a robust economy and job market companies that otherwise wouldn’t hire them, have to.

Remind them about this over and over with the fact that it is Republican policies that produce the thriving economy that gives them their chance at a decent, satisfying financial life. Take this lemon and turn it into lemonade. After all, it’s the truth.

Why should Murderers be allowed to breathe?

These responses are so idiotic I’m getting tired of answering them.

Murders are allowed to breathe (or not) depending on the murder and the circumstances, as everyone knows.

The removal of voting rights for felons is arbitrary, can be changed and has been changed in Florida by the votes of the citizenry.

IMO this action comports with our founding principles.

By the way, the new Florida law does not allow murderers to vote so your is irrelevant like every other response so far.

Soros will pay lots of money to register them & bring them to vote. He’s playing for keeps.

“A good compromise would have been to permanently deny the right to vote if there is a second felony conviction. But I still think this is a bad idea. Do people think the cons are going to learn civics while they’re in prison?”

That’s not a bad idea. Given that prosecutors like to take a single crime and Yale multiple convictions under different statues it should be two strikes on totally separate incidents - separated by time of conviction.

However I do believe that criminal conviction for violent crimes should necessitate they be disenfranchised on the first conviction per the original intent that disenfranchisement was designed for.

If they have voting rights restored, they should have Second Amendment rights restored.

Because loss of the voting right is part of the so-called “debt.” “The debt” is a prison sentence plus other punishments including loss of certain rights. Get it now?

agree.....its nuts to make Florida into a Democrat state by instantly legalizing felons when they get out prison. Democrats pushed this referendum. Who benefits? Libs and Dems do. Duh!

Naïve my ass. In America when you have served your time you have paid your debt to society. Should they be able to get a job? Marry? Divorce? Drive? On what basis are they disenfranchised? Every commenter I see is only upset this because they think these people will vote Democrat. So if they were expected to vote R, all around here would be fine with it. Hypocrisy.

Ouch. This topic seems to strike someone's nerve. Hmmm. I will BET that you don't live in Florida. Yeah, you're right, I AM ticked off that these people will undoubtedly vote straight D (those who actually vote, that is). If I thought they'd vote R, I WOULD BE GLEEFUL, just like the Ds are today. But guess what? If these felons were expected to vote R, this law would NEVER have seen the light of day in Florida. I don't care if they get married, get a job (right...), get divorced, or drive. I just don't want another 1.4 million D voters automatically added to the rolls. Call me whatever name you want. I'll keep mine for you to myself.

I’m still waiting to hear why a felon who has paid his/her debt to society shouldn’t be able to vote.

For the same reason we don't allow 15-year olds to vote. The state has interest in assuring responsible citizens vote, not losers that have committed serious crimes.

Not being allowed to vote is part of the punishment and deterrent.
