The usual protocol is a cabinet member tenders an undated letter of resignation to the President upon selection. When that member's services are no longer needed, the President affixes a date and a polite announcement of the resignation of that member is announced. There is no "firing". A member could certainly inform the President of intention to resign vs being informed after the date was affixed.
