Promise not to kill anyone? After losing election, TX judge wholesale releases juvenile defendants
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | November 7, 2018 | By Keri Blakinger

After losing his bench in a Democratic sweep the night before, Harris County Juvenile Court Judge Glenn Devlin released nearly all of the youthful defendants that appeared in front him on Wednesday morning, simply asking the kids whether they planned to kill anyone before letting them go.

"He was releasing everybody," said public defender Steven Halpert, who watched the string of surprising releases. "Apparently he was saying that's what the voters wanted."

The long-time Republican jurist is one of two judges whose track record of favoring incarceration contributed heavily to doubling the number of kids Harris County sent to the Texas Juvenile Justice Department in recent years, even as those figures fell in the rest of the state.

Together, he and Judge John Phillips accounted for more than one-fifth of all children sent to the state's juvenile prisons last year.

Those two jurists not only sent more teens to juvenile prison, but they also sent them younger and for less-serious offenses than the county's third juvenile court, where Judge Mike Schneider presides.

But despite the differences in their courtroom practices, all three of the juvenile judges lost their benches to Democrats in Tuesday's election by at least 10-point spreads.

Judge to citizens: “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes”. He isn’t wrong, that is what the bleeding hearts want.

Giving the county what they wanted. Good for the judge!

He is just giving the population what they voted to transpire with their new choice. I can’t blame him for doing so.

Pretty much. Harris County is where Houston is. The big city is liberal, like all the big cities in Texas. I live in Pasadena where it is mostly conservative but that is changing too because of all the new comers. (sigh)

I saw a bumper sticker that said: “Don’t Californiacate my Texas.”

Hey, I live in NY and between NY and CA, I think there are more in CA, MILLIONS of dems could move and we’d STILL lose the senate and damage would be done to other states.

Don’t shoot me. I’m just the messenger.

Staten Island voted for Trump.

As for last night, I think the russians and albanians that are pouring into brooklyn (part of this district) AND staten island are the reason. Dems all the way.

They LOVE free stuff as much as other minority groups.

If the voters want judges that are soft on crime, it stands to reason that these judges will give the voters what they’ve asked for.

Now watch crime skyrocket in the areas where the dem judges are taking over.

I saw a bumper sticker that said: “Don’t Californiacate my Texas.”

Back in the seventies, there were a lot of "Don't Californicate Oregon" bumper stickers around there. See how that worked out?

Regardless of why he’s doing this, no person holding such responsibility as an elected judge in (especially in my Texas) should be letting criminals free.

I have to agree wholeheartedly.

He should have remanded all the cases to the new judge and given them all orders to appear at a future date or not presided over any more cases.
