The report that came out soon after the hubbub had subsided was that if Gore had gotten everything he asked for Bush would have won, but if Bush had gotten everything he asked for then Gore would have one.

This is an obvious case why elections need to be handled with a lot more care than currently.

I would be in favor of all elections moving to a Saturday/Sunday and then doing away with mail in ballots and making it difficult to get an absentee ballot. If most people had to go to a polling place and present proper ID that would help eliminate most voter fraud.

Then if we do away with electronic voting and require ballot security similar to what is provided for the Oscar results, then we can eliminate fraud by political parties.

It is really sad that in almost all elections one of two things happens: one candidate wins in a landslide, or the result is so close that voter/party fraud can open the door to overturning the true result.

In either case our votes don't count.

Let’s also dip voters’ thumbs in indelible purple ink, like we made the Iraqis do to avoid fraud. This way, if they wish to vote again, they can do so only if they cut off the thumb, so that there’s no purple ink.

I’m actually fairly serious - there need to be some very heavy penalties for cheating. No, not medieval torture, but hefty jail sentences...in northern Alaska in the winter, and in Death Valley in the summer. That’ll stop the fraud pretty quickly.
