If they can. If they survive long enough. A lot die young: drugs, violent pimps, suicide and other self destructive behavior, violent johns...and threatening the reputations of the rich and powerful.
All those and more.
But the majority of prostitutes in the United States only work part time, and keep a day job, unlike this woman here. Freelancing allows them to vet cliants before any deals are made, and working in different places with an eratic on again off again schedule pretty much avoids law enforcement.
Diseases and health hazards resulting from stress and odd hours are still killer, and a high percentage of former sex professionals I know have had strokes, or heart attacks, or developed nervous system disorders.
