Queen Elizabeth II, Royal Family Attend WWI Festival of Remembrance
BBC ^ | Nov 10, 2018

The Queen and senior royals attended a remembrance concert at the Royal Albert Hall on the eve of Armistice Day.

It came ahead of Remembrance Sunday on 11 November, which this year marks 100 years since the end of World War One.

The dukes and duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex, and Prime Minister Theresa May were among the audience.

The royals stood as thousands of people in the audience held up photos of World War One soldiers - including Mrs May and husband Philip who held pictures of two of her ancestors.

Poppies fell from the ceiling of the iconic venue, after the Last Post was played.

The event was organised by the Royal British Legion as a "thank you to all who served, sacrificed and changed our world".

The concert saw performances from Welsh singer Bryn Terfel, who sang Amazing Grace, as well as former McFly stars Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones who sang a song written to celebrate the RAF centenary.

Sheridan Smith sang Are You Just Sleeping, while British cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason - who won BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2016 - played a version of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen.

The Kingdom Choir, who performed at Prince Harry and Meghan's wedding, sang a version of the Lord's Prayer.

The armistice agreement was signed on Nov. 11 at 5:20 a.m., Paris time, and took effect at 11:00 a.m., also Paris time. On the East Coast, that translates to 11:20 p.m. tonight and 5:00 a.m. tomorrow. Two moments to pause.

One of the commemorations involves the ringing of bells at 11:00 a.m. local time. This will be done in several thousand places in Europe and the U.S. -- churches, universities and other institutions old fashioned enough to still have a bell. It will be interesting to see how many U.S. churches pause their Sunday morning services to participate.

Until, as part of a deal with Germany, Vladimir Lenin overthrew the Whites and withdrew Russia from the war.

“The beauty of Albert Hall is it is indoors.”

And now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall.

Yes, the Germans helped speed that along by identifying Russian prisoners of war who were found to be in possession of Bolshevik anti-war propaganda leaflets, and making sure that those prisoners were sent back to Russia in the prisoner exchanges.

Still, Russia lost more men than any other nation in the conflict.

After the Bolshevik coup in November 1917 lwnin initiated peace talks with Germany. That, and land reform for the peasants, was the core plank of the Bolsheviks. By signing a really bad peace treaty in terms of land and resources, the leftist social revolutionaries (SRs) rebelled and formed a government near the Urals. Thus was the start of the Red-Green civil war. The SRs supported the whites inky because they hated the Bolsheviks more. By fall 1918 the SRs were gone but white armies were forming in Siberia, the Donbas, and Estonia along with a puppet German government in Ukraine. The allies landed troops and never forgave Lenin for stabbing them in the back.
