In the US, they broke away the Genesis ticking off a lot of Hyundai dealers.
And not 1 in 10 customers knows what a Genesis is!

I drive a Genesis 5.0
Probably the nicest thing I will ever own. 429 hp and the same stereo as a Roll Royce Phantom.

Hyundai was just several years into breaking away from the ignominy of the Excel’s reputation as a lemon, when it started raising prices big time. This was at a time when the Japanese manufacturers were continuing to de-content their cars, taking care to keep reliability of the bread-and-butter powertrain components intact, while chintzing out on trim, to keep pricing competitive. It took well over a decade of established Toyota reliability stateside before it started the Lexus marque. Hyundai really jumped the gun.

Had a 2005 Tucson with chronic engine problems. Dealer treated us so badly we actually consulted a lawyer regarding the lemon law. After several months of the dealer having it more than us, and a literal shouting match and threats they finally fixed the expensive issue under warranty. We traded it in on a different vehicle two days later. Worst experience with a car company ever. They may have improved, but that was so bad I’ll never even consider another.
