Congress returns to new dynamic, GOP shutdown threat

WASHINGTON — Congress returns to a changed political landscape Tuesday as newly-elected lawmakers arrive in Washington, the parties elect new leadership and incumbents square off for one final legislative sprint before House Democrats take power.

Voters swept away eight years of House Republican control in last week's election, creating a new political dynamic that's challenging President Donald Trump even before the new 116th Congress begins in January.

For their last act, Republicans will try to deliver on Trump's promise to fund the border wall, which could spark a partial federal government shutdown in weeks. Newly emboldened Democrats are in no mood to cooperate over wall money. Instead, they'll be pushing to protect special counsel Robert Mueller's probe from acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker, who has criticized the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. All sides must agree to a federal funding bill to prevent a partial government shutdown from beginning on Dec. 7.

Well said. Thanks. Needed one little bit of light in a very dark week of talk. And I am one on the “dark” (read: discouraged) side of things......

I agree that Rino’s like Ryan caused mayhem. But it was the Senate where the real problems occurred which is why the Dims are pulling out all the crime to bring the Senate down.

Their majority lost, House Republicans will start the task of rebuilding. Retiring Speaker Paul Ryan will begin to transition out of power and next-in-line Kevin McCarthy of California is favored over conservative Rep. Jim Jordan, a leader of the Freedom Caucus, to win the job of incoming minority leader in leadership elections Wednesday. GOP Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana is expected keep his spot unchallenged. And new to leadership will be Rep. Liz Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, in the No. 3 position of conference chair.

Partner, Paul Ryan is now the worst Spekaer ever of the House. We can thank him for our losses.

Ryan was a disgrace, I agree.

But the real hold up was in the Senate = with that slim majority we couldn’t get anything much passed, including the end to Obamacare.

At least the House got the Tax cuts passed (and so did the Senate thankfully).....but it is in the Senate where we almost lost the confirmation of Justice Kavenaugh. By God’s grace we didn’t lose that one.

But lots of measures did pass the House only to get stopped in the Senate.

There is plenty of blame to go around.

But then I am in a minority.

LOL, what a laugh.

Middle of the road moderate BS here we come.

Two more years of promises by GOP congressmen lying to us about what they’ll do if they get back the House. I bet it’s repeal Obamacare, a border wall and less spending. Maybe even throw in election control and actually remember we have a FEC.

HA

NO!
The republicans have been (in the past) so very bad at communicating to the public.. they let the dems have the floor and let them tell their lies on tv.. so the gop got the brunt of closing gov.

It doesn’t have to be that way. The GOP has to talk.. explain.. don’t let the dems set the pace or the picture. Letting the gov shut down shows strength and would make the dems use something else as threats to get their way!

Look at the words used. “Shut down the gov”... or “willing to work out an aggreement but if the dems want the gov shut down instead.. then they will shut it down”. Ya can’t give in to threats... the threats just increase and used for everything. Show strength by not giving in.. and tell the public (over and over), it’s the dems who are shutting it down because all they want to do is stall and resist.. to get their way.. they can’t get their way all the time... it’s work with us or take their ball and go home.

Use words to set it up and use words to put the blame squarely where it belongs!

Notice how the EFFIN AP Calls it dynamic..but when the republicans took over it was chaotic, disturbing and too much power for one party dictatorship blah, blah..etc. God forgive me but I hate the effin mediapukes...I hate them!! Life is to short to be worrying about our government..I have decided to live life as best as I can without politics and ALL THE MEDIAPUKES including ALL OF FOX!!! That’s it I’m finished! Our party is dead floating on top of the sewer water..they are cowards, spineless and lovers of power for themselves only$$$.. Come 2020 if President Trump decides to run he’ll be the only vote I’ll cast. WHAT IS THE USE OF FIGHTING for a party who backstabbs its members at every turn..they fear, concede and cater more to the rats then their own party!

So the new house leadership will consist of California RINO and a lesbian?

Well we sort of survived 8 years of a gay Muslim president. I guess we can survive a few lesbians.

The GOP came out of the 2014 election with 247 seats in the House. That's the most they ever had since the 1940s -- a period that includes the momentous 1994 Republican wave under Newt Gingrich.

I'm not a big Paul Ryan fan, but I think a lot of the criticism he gets is unwarranted. It's impossible to manage a legislative agenda with a constituency spread across so many geographic, demographic and political groups.

The blame for “getting nothing done” is solidly on the Senate, and specifically on a few Republican “mavericks.”

Nonsense. Amnesty Ryan worked hand in glove with McConnell to craft the stinking piles of garbage omnibus bills.

Don’t buy into the beltway theater optics. The House GOP passed many “conservative” bills they knew the Senate was never going to take up. They love Planned Parenthood and nothing will stop them from funding it, etc.

Republicans need to shut up until they learn how to speak succinctly and on point. Meandering speechifying does no one any good. Americans’ attention spans are limited to about 3 seconds. Republicans have been stuck on an outmoded rhetorical model and they need to quit. Let me put it bluntly:

Aristotelian logic is lost; Socratic dialogue is dead; Plato’s philosophy is passe.

Argue all you want, but face reality. Learn from the Trump. Never respond; drive, drive, drive:

• Jobs, not mobs
• Jobs, not mobs
• Jobs, not mobs

• Immigration; not invasion
• Immigration; not invasion
• Immigration; not invasion

• Build the wall
• Build the wall
• Build the wall

• Resist Groupthink
• Resist Groupthink
• Resist Groupthink

• No NPC
• No NPC
• No NPC

Repeat ad nauseam.

Every single time.

No matter what the question.

Paul Ryan is one of the biggest frauds in political history.

Some deficit hawk. He supported no child left behind, medicare part d, every bush/obama budget, amnesty, TARP, other bailouts, Patriot ACt, Iraq invasion, etc. There wasn't a increase in government spending he didn't like in the end.

I’ve not decided regarding Cheney’s daughter......I want to see more. She can be tough but will she be tough with what needs to get done? We shall see.
