Bush unnecessarily prolonged it. We should have been gone within 2 years, and never gotten into the so-called nation-build phase. Punitive expedition and out.

G. W. Bush foolishly prolonged it, by sending in troops with entirely untenable rules of engagement which were guaranteed at the outset not to achieve any lasting results of any sort.

Which was pointed out at the time.

It was a disaster from the get-go. Bush thought he could be the guy to make Afghanistan into a western style democracy. It was entirely stupid.
