I’m pretty certain that she has to hear the case in order to participate in the disposition of it. She doesn’t have to resign just because she doesn’t appear - but if she or her clerks tried to file an opinion without hearing the case, it would IMHO be a scandal even the MSM couldn’t suppress.
IIRC, the court started before Kavanaugh was seated and there was discussion if he would be able to give an opinions on cases he didn’t participate in.
