Harry Truman was a really humble man.

That's true, and he was happy being a local judge in Missori but the political machine that controlled him wanted a Senator and he was told it was going to be him. So off he went, against his will. But he liked being a Senator, it turns out. Until FDR said he wanted him as a running mate, which he absolutelty didn't want. But he did what he was told again, and ended up President when FDR died. He was not happy and he didn't think he was up to the task but he was stuck with it.
The difference is that Truman sort of fell into the Presidency. He didn't pursue it, didn't want it, and didn't think he was the right man for it. At least initially.
Divine intervention made sure that he replaced Henry Wallace.
