Zeigler, a retired Detroit Fire Department lieutenant, is charged with assault with intent to murder and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The assault charge can carry a penalty of any term of years up to life in prison, and the firearm offense carries a mandatory two-year sentence.
Reading further in the article, it becomes clear why this man was given such harsh punishment for a crime in which no actual harm was done to anyone.

Liberal identity politics were involved, and this man was the football. Now the story makes sense, though it still seems to me to be a miscarriage of justice.
