Outrage as Cook County judge grants $400 cash bail to suspect charged with raping a disabled woman

Illinois last year enacted a Bail Reform Law intended to make bail affordable for poor people. Kim Geiger of the Chicago Tribune explained at the time of passage:

…the new law creates new rights for people in custody at Illinois jails and aims to move away from requiring people charged with relatively minor crimes to post cash bail as a condition of their release.

The legislation reflects a general consensus among criminal justice advocates, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, and Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx that the state's cash bail system is unfair to poor people.

Under the previous law, many nonviolent, low-level offenders were spending weeks or months in jail because they couldn't come up with the 10 percent down payment that's required in order to be released. In 2015, for example, more than 1,000 inmates in the Cook County Jail had served more time in custody than they were ultimately sentenced to serve, according to Dart's office.

This is the latest progressive enthusiasm. They’re pushing this in California as well.

You have to wonder what is the inner motivation that guides Judges to a decision like this one?
Is there a feeling of being a ‘kindred spirit’?
Some Judges appear to serve for the purpose of releasing poison on civilized society.
What are the races involved? It should not matter at all, but with many of self centered, race or sex always matters.

They’re pushing this in California as well.

I think they've already enacted this POS law in Caliph-phony-a. I've heard ads from a local bail bonds company trying to get enough signatures to put a repeal measure on the ballot.

If they do, I'm sure Atty. General Backstabber will rewrite it for the ballot in such a way to make it sound like it would cause anyone going in front of a judge will get huge unaffordable bail, whether it's 1st degree murder or shoplifting.

The Judge is a Democrat.

Democrats punish and prosecute the innocent.

Democrats protect the guilty.

Democrats protect the criminal element.

Democrats and common sense have nothing in common.

Democrats and decency have nothing in common.

From the article: “In 2015, for example, more than 1,000 inmates in the Cook County Jail had served more time in custody than they were ultimately sentenced to serve, according to Dart’s office.”

So what! IF THAT JUDGE is letting the bus driver out with only $400.00 bail then what was the sentencing criteria before? Were these bad guys/gals getting off with hand slaps, or were they getting legitimate sentences relative to the crime? The article doesn’t address the issue any further.

I would expect far better journalism than this from Thomas Lifson.

“to make bail affordable for poor people”
Lawmakers need to think about the consequences of their actions.

If those so called “poor people” are upset at bail being too high they should protest by not committing the crimes in the first place

Many “judges” deserve a good dragging behind a pick em up truck down a rocky dirt road.

This might be the same judge who set $300.00 bail on someone caught in possession of 1 million dollars of cocaine in their car.

A bus driver? The judge probably figured the driver would hang around long enough to qualify for his $100,000/year pension.

I think a better question to ask is does the judge have friends or family who contract with the state or county to provide electronic monitoring. This is an overpriced service that the accused has to pay out of his own pocket.

You see a judge handing out low bail + EM like it’s candy, you should check to see if he’s getting a cut.
