In my state (New Jersey), almost all of the Republican incumbents were destroyed by Democrats who didn't campaign on a damn thing. All they did was point out that the Republicans controlled the White House and both Houses of Congress for two years -- and have almost nothing to show for it.

This illustrates one of the oldest rules of politics: It's always much easier to campaign when you're out of power.
