I’m seriously confused by the first sentence in the article. Are Mexican authorities now officially in charge of the U.S. border, or is this simply an understanding of our default position?

Yeah, I mentioned that in my post just before this one.

Neither country allows people into the other country. All they can do is block you from leaving the country. And that is an old “East Germany” sort of thing.

Yep. Seems to be grounds for POTUS to recall his ambassador to Mexico, close the border and play hard ball. But so far we getting way more bark than bite from him on the border.
