St. Louis area substitute teacher Jim Furkin was fired in October after he thanked the children for standing for the Pledge of Allegiance.
This offended one student so Jim lost his teaching gig.

Must be more to the story. If not, what kind of administrator would fire a 10 year substitute teacher because some whining kid brought this to them? They were either looking to fire the guy or there is a much bigger issue here.

ONE student should step forward and say he is offended that the class doesn’t sing the Star Spangles Banner every morning.
Yep. My fifth grade teacher was missing a chunk of his right ear, courtesy of a bomb fragment delivered to his ship via kamikaze attack near Okinawa. I overheard he and my dad trading war stories at a parent-teacher event.
West Virginia State Board of Ed v. Barnette (1943) found that Schools cannot force students to salute the flag, nor stand for the Pledge. The 1st Amendment protects the student’s rights to dissent.
Any action by a public school, or public school teacher to coerce students into standing or saying the pledge, including thanking those who did stand, can be seen as a violation of the student’s rights.
And WHERE, exactly, is DeVos? Nowhere to be found. Indeed, she’s made no effort to bring this insanity to heel. So, the next question is: Why hasn’t team Trump recognized her ineffectiveness and dealt with it?
At least we know the ACLU will be on this in a day or two...

Some wealthy people work their asses off (Trump). Apparently other wealthy people accept flashy titles, but consider the duties as hobbies.
Shockingly, GP didn’t mention the school’s take on this.
According to the school board..
“we would not recommend that a substitute teacher be restricted from a school simply based on a single isolated incident such as this. Several factors, including prior concerns at other schools, would be taken into consideration before making a recommendation.”We always try to protect the privacy of everyone involved during these matters. However, there has been an omission of important facts in this case. The truth is, we recommended that this substitute not return due to a pattern of inappropriate conduct.
The employee was previously restricted from another Parkway high school for recording video of students without their permission in class. In addition, he violated appropriate teacher-to-student interactions by sharing his personal contact information with students at South High. Based on previous concerns from staff and students, the principal of South High addressed these matters with the substitute teacher. The substitute was coached and reminded of his professional obligations.
Unfortunately, he did not maintain the high standards we expect of adults who work with our children.”
