NBC host Chuck Todd on Tuesday criticized the White House's new rules for reporters at presidential news conferences, calling them "absurd" and predicting that journalists won't follow them.
"These arent exactly pro first amendment rules. I assume there isnt a single serious journalist in the WH press corps who would abide by these absurd 'rules.' Manners is one thing, but regulating follow ups is a form of censorship," he wrote in a tweet.
The White House announced the new rules on Monday after restoring the press credential of CNN reporter Jim Acosta. It had been revoked last week after he refused to give up the microphone earlier this month while attempting to ask Trump a question about the Russia investigation.
The new rules include limiting journalists to asking one question and allowing follow-up questions only at the discretion of Trump or other White House officials answering questions.
In response, the president of the White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) said in a statement Monday that the WHCA expects reporters to continue asking follow-up questions.
"The White House Correspondents' Association had no role in crafting any procedures for future press conferences. For as long as there have been White House press conferences, White House reporters have asked follow-up questions," WCHA President Olivier Knox said. "We fully expect this tradition will continue."
Then no serious journalist will be able to get a hard pass.
Thank you Jim Acosta.
Well Chuck Todd can drop out and let his seat be taken by a serious, respectful journalist. I am sure there are a few around.
Trump has no problem doing follow-ups.
Cue the judge disallowing the new rules 3 . . . 2 . . . 1 . . .
No serious journalist... Is that akin to no reasonable prosecutor ?
He should have stopped at ...I assume there isnt a single serious journalist
unbelievable
I seem to recall from press conferences past reporters actually asking if they could have a follow-up question. This is nothing new.
Trump is there to answer questions that are not loaded, not to be interviewed or cross-examined.
If they would just pretend Trump is Obama, there wouldn’t be any problems.
The way the rules read, you ask your question, get the answer, and then say "can I have a follow-up?" What in the world is wrong with that?
This is all about the press wanting to be able to yell at/badger the target of the question, and to disrupt the process enough so that it can't go on unless they get their follow-up. That's inconsiderate of everyone else in the room who may want to ask their own question, and disrespectful to the people attempting to answer questions.
This is as it has always been. You only get a follow-up if allowed. Because of Acosta and the undignified actions of the Press this Administration has been forced to codify the rules.
Disban the disloyal media clique and kick them out of the WH.
Chuck Todd needs to actually read the First amendment. Nothing in there about press conferences at all.
Did not bother to pay attention did you Chuckie?
Judge told you media clowns YOU HAVE NO 1st Amendment right to special access.
Try behaving like adult professionals instead of infantile narcissistic jackasses and they White House will not need to treat you like unruly petulant pre-schoolers.
They need the WH more than the WH needs them to report their phony stories.
This micro-management by the court of the WH to control its own processes is itself absurd.
I dont know what he means by a serious journalist. I have never heard of one.
