The subpoenas are part of an investigation into decisions made by the Justice Department during the 2016 election, when Democrat Hillary Clinton was cleared in a probe into her email use and Justice officials launched an investigation into Trump’s campaign and Russia.

Both Comey and Lynch were in power during that time.

House Judiciary members and Oversight and Government Reform panels have argued that Justice officials were conspiring against Trump’s election, and they have interviewed multiple current and former Justice officials, behind closed doors, in an effort to prove their case.

Comey knows that congress can’t ask certain questions in public such as the ones that involve the use of UK intel assets in the spy operation against Trump. There are also questions involving the Clinton foundation’s relationship with Russian high tech companies with ties to Russian military that FBI was investigating.

It's actually quite true that the 'only' reason this arrogant piece of crap said he’d “fight” a closed meeting is because the questions we need answers to will refer to CLASSIFIED information he can ONLY talk about in private session.....That’s why he wants a PUBLIC hearing, so he can claim why he can't answer or dodge answering......
