Paradise fire is deadliest U.S. wildfire in 100 years; eerily similar to 1918 inferno
San Jose Mercury ^ | November 22, 2018 | Paul Rogers

With the death toll at 83 and counting, the Camp Fire in Butte County ranks as the deadliest wildfire anywhere in the United States in 100 years.

But the last time a wildfire killed this many people in America, many of the circumstances were eerily similar: Parched forests. Strong winds. Terrified townspeople killed while fleeing in their cars. Towns wiped off the map. A nation stunned.

It happened in 1918 in Northern Minnesota, near Duluth.

1,200+ deaths, 1871 (Peshtigo Fire, Wisconsin) 453+ deaths, 1918 (Cloquet Fire, Minnesota) 418+ deaths, 1894 (Hinkley Fire, Minnesota) 282 deaths, 1882 (Thumb Fire, Michigan) 87 deaths, 1910 (Great Fire of 1910, Idaho and Montana)

Seems that 5 of the worse fires in US history occurred before the concept of global warming was thought up.

You beat me to it.

Wildfires have nothing to with liberal pet theories about the environment.

Minnesota’s Great Hinckley Fire of 1894 is a helluva story.

The land was covered with trimmings from massive logging, combined with a drought, and then an unimaginable firestorm. Truly a storm of fire, many thousands of feet high, creating massive air inrushes and fire tornadoes.

Vegetation has evolved to require high intensity firestorms to germinate.

Its one of those paradoxes of nature that devastating destruction can propagate new life in its wake.

Wildfires existed on this planet long before man.

Jerry Brown's legacy and a metaphor of the fate of white Americans in California: burned to ashes by the insane policies of a twisted ideology

Victoria Taft, 66 years old, Paradise, CA. Nothing found of her except ashes in what was her house.

Utter nonsense!

Wildfires came into existence long after the flood.

All of the wild vegetation that surrounds my ranch (Stanislaus NF) germinates quite nicely every year without any fires.

That is a big part of our problem. Chamise is about as prolific as Bermuda grass.

Or humans living in places where death can overtake them without warning.

We’re not in complete control of nature as we like to think and our arrogance about it can lead to the unfortunate demise of innocent people.

Wildfires show us the limits of how we can master the world around us.

If you have combustible vegetation around you, all that gets quickly consumed and the seeds only sprout when exposed to intense heat.

Fires shape the environment and ecological cycles progress quickly in its presence.

All of the recent major fires in CA are arson originated by aircraft mounted directed beam weapons.

They ignite these fires by heating large metal objects, like stoves and refrigerators inside of houses, or cars parked along roads.

There are thousands of places where houses are burned without harming trees nearby.

How can you say that? Gaia Pope Algore the Only has told us that Glo-bull warming is entirely man-made. Further, it's settled science. Stop being a luddite, you science-denier!

Absolute nonsense!

I have to remove thousands of Chamise and Manzanita shoots every year, without any fire at all. Been doing it for 19 years.

Ok everyone. See the danger of legalizing cannabis. Rational thought goes out the window. Put the bong down and go enjoy some turkey.

Wildfires existed on this planet long before man.

Scientists have found evidence of wildfires occurring in the paleozoic era, a half a million years ago, long before there were dinosaurs.

Did you mean psuedo-scientists?

The universe is 6020 years old, as measured here at its point of origin (+/-)

Said universe was expanded after it was created.

If you expand space, time is also expanded as it grows.

That means that there is an appearance of age when viewing distant objects, but that appearance has no effect upon the age of our 6000 year old galaxy.

I didn’t see a sarcasm tag, have you truly lost it?
Do you really believe the drivel you are posting?
You really don’t know squat about fire in general, or wild fires in particular do you.

Not only is the origin of these fires suspicious, but we have no proof of what happened to “hundreds” of people. How do we know they weren’t grabbed, kidnapped, murdered, or ritually sacrificed before the fire came along to obliterate any evidence?

The heat from the Peshtigo fire was so intense that when people ran into the five to seek shelter, they found it was near boiling. While he history books claim 1,200 deaths, they are estimates.
