It’s not entirely absurd. There are numbers of militia types along the border, assisting the badly outmanned Border Patrol, mostly by spotting and relaying sightings of illegal crossers. It’s not unthinkable that one or more of them will take matters into their own hands, especially if confronted by invaders.
